From 24th-26th November 2017 the 78th International Ornithological Show “City of the Tricolor” will take place at Fiere Reggio Emila. The event is organized by the Reggiana Ornithological Society (For information: www .sor.re.it; firstname.lastname@example.org; 0522/515118).
The inauguration of the exhibition will take place on Saturday 25th November at 11.00am.
40,000 people from all over the world are expected, bird enthusiasts who will reach Fiere Reggio Emilia with their own specimens to participate in the competitions, but also simply to admire the birds inside the pavilions that are hardly found elsewhere.
It is the most long-lived ornithological event in the world, and by far the most important in Europe. It has survived unscathed world wars and economic crises, always bringing the best of world ornithology to Reggio Emilia. It has exceeded its records, year after year, always improving the quality and quantity of its exposure. In recent years it has also been an exceptional economic vehicle for the companies from Reggio Emilia and for the food and wine products typical of our land, offered inside the exhibition to visitors from all over the world.
This year the Ornitological Show makes also use of the precious contribution of young Reggio Emilia’s students. For the occasion, It was signed the agreement with the Pascal Institute for interpreting assistance on show through the participation of 18 youngsters and with the Zanelli Institute with the record participation of 60 students who will provide assistance during the entire duration of the event. An initiative aimed at combining two opportunities: the one for young people who can do in this way a full immersion of work (useful) and the one of exhibitors and visitors who can enjoy a useful and important service, since it’s an international event with a thousand languages.
“I expect a moment of peace and serenity to live together – said Enrico Banfi, President of Sor-, there will certainly be competition for participation in competitions, but it will be a calm and orderly competition”. “It is moving that at a national level a very simple hobby is not yet fully understood which, in the face of bureaucratic complications, it could discourage young people to become passionate and encourage adults to leave, with the risk of losing social and economic value, since thousands of jobs in related industries are in stake”.
A gem in the days of the preparation of the exhibition: the dietetic menu of the judges. “It seems right,” the organizers explain, “to reassure all the fans that the precious judges are subjected to a rigorous Emilian dietetic menu, which, given the circumstances, excludes any food that has to do with the poultry … SOR has promptly provided and with due scruple “. The reference is to bird flu …

Information on the Ornithological Show and expectations
There will be about 23 thousand birds on display (only to count those officially registered in the competition, while you can only estimate the number of subjects hosted in the market), 1,800 international breeders, 800 exhibitors, 16 countries represented and a number of visitors that in 2016 has exceeded 30 thousand units. This year the International Ornitological Show will unveil more than 23 thousand square meters of exhibition space, with an increase in requests compared to last year to make the three pavilions and other facilities largely insufficient to accommodate all exhibitors. It is not surprising, therefore, that the Ornithological Show is considered the most important showcase in the world for professionals and a unique opportunity for exchange for fans, but also a very important economic flywheel for the city: the turnover of the companies in the sector inside the pavilions has been calculated in 4 million euro last year, with an income of around 40 million.
Extremely rare subjects to admire
At the Esposizione Ornitologica Internazionale it will be possible to admire very rare subjects, some of which, unfortunately, are almost extinct in their countries of origin, because of the destruction of the original habitat. The sport breeders present at Fiere Reggio Emilia have created perfect conditions in their breedings for captive reproduction. Today, if It’s still possible to admire these beautiful birds, especially parrots of all sizes, it is also for the skill, dedication and sacrifice of sport breeders. Some of the exposed breeds are used, due to their particular characteristics of “character”, very similar to that of the “best humans”, in the pet therapy activities.
Typical gastronomy proposed in show
Since last year, the typical dishes of the Reggio area will replace the traditional sandwiches in the bars inside the fair. At very reasonable prices and with guaranteed quality, tortelli and lasagne will be distributed by the two restaurants (or rather, “trattoria”) operating inside the pavilions.
Also this year a part of the proceeds will be donated to social protection initiatives on the territory of the Reggio Emilia community
